Testing for Lupus

Updated: Mar 1

Lupus is a chronic and complex disease. It is difficult to diagnose because it mimics so many other conditions and diseases. No two people will have the same experiences.

Although laboratory tests alone usually do not provide a diagnosis for lupus. There are several different tests used to detect changes in the body caused by lupus. Each test provides additional information that doctors use to make a definitive diagnosis. If an auto-immune disorder is suspected, your doctor will request a complete blood count (CBC) with differential, antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-DNA and urine test. The skin and kidneys are usually biopsied to show the amount of inflammation present and to determine if any damage is being done.
